Job Summary
The Vessel Operator manages commercial and post-fixture voyage operations for tanker vessels, ensuring safe, cost-effective, and compliant voyage execution aligned with Charter Party terms and international maritime regulations.
Responsibilities
Issue clear voyage instructions to Masters and agents to ensure compliance with Charter Party warranties and optimize vessel performance
Monitor daily vessel movements, speed, and fuel consumption to maintain operational efficiency and cost control
Coordinate loading and discharge operations, review stowage and pumping plans to optimize turnaround times and cargo safety
Serve as the primary operational liaison among Vessel Masters, Charterers, Brokers, Port Agents, Terminals, and Bunker Suppliers to facilitate smooth voyage execution
Appoint port agents and arrange husbandry services to support port calls and cargo operations
Oversee preparation and verification of shipping documentation including Bills of Lading, Notice of Readiness, Statement of Facts, and Letters of Indemnity
Plan and manage bunker procurement across voyages to minimize fuel costs while maintaining adequate fuel reserves on board
Calculate laytime and process demurrage and despatch claims to protect commercial interests
Collaborate with internal legal teams to handle cargo claims and dispute resolution effectively
Ensure vessel operations comply with MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM, ISPS, and vetting standards such as SIRE and Port State Control
Required competencies and certifications
Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Logistics, or a related discipline
2–5 years of experience in tanker commercial operations (Oil/Chemical/Gas) or relevant sea-going experience as a deck officer
Strong knowledge of Charter Party agreements (Spot and Time Charter), laytime calculations, and tanker operational procedures
Proficiency in maritime operating software such as IMOS and Veson Voyage Management, and MS Office
Effective communication, analytical problem-solving, and time-management skills under high-pressure conditions
Preferred competencies
Minimum 1–2 years of relevant Tanker Operations experience, preferably with exposure to Crude, CPP and/or DPP.
Strong communication, coordination and interpersonal skills.
Highly organized and detail-oriented, with good problem-solving abilities.
Able to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
A positive and proactive attitude, with a genuine interest in developing a career in shipping and maritime.
Willingness to learn, take on new responsibilities and grow with the team.
Comfortable working independently while also being an effective team player within a global organization.
